Walter's formal academic education was at the University of Queensland where he studied a number of disciplines before punching his first card in 1971. After some part time studies in Computer Science, he got his first job in the IT industry with Burroughs, then a fairly big player in the industry, now part of Unisys. After a year with Burroughs in various capacities, he moved to a software house and again fulfilled a number of roles. Towards the end of 1977, Walter and another employee of the same software house left to form their own consultancy. In the following 10 years, Walter provided various services to Commerce and Industry, sometimes with the help of other professionals, sometimes without.

In 1980, the Australian Computer Society deemed Walter sufficiently qualified and experienced to be awarded membership. In the UK, lacking locally recognised qualifications, Walter wrote accounts of some of his major projects and had them signed off by the Australian clients. Together with his 15 years experience, this satisfied the British Computer Society that it was appropriate to admit him to the BCS.

Somewhat more recently the Engineering Council awarded Walter the title of Chartered Engineer. And on 29th February 2000 (an interesting date for calendar scholars), Walter was recognised by the European Federation of National Engineering Associations (FEANI) as a European Engineer - Eur.Ing. Walter Spring.

In 2003, Walter migrated across The Pond to continue his life and career in the United States.
